Using art as the vehicle, Holdfast Limestone Coast embraces science and culture to promote the treasure trove of diverse algae species on our Limestone Coast.
Using fresh specimens collected on the beach walk this morning, or choosing from previously dried specimens, you will create an image to be used as a bookmark or gift card.
You will learn how to assemble your own plant press and how to arrange and press fresh algae specimens.
The final masterpieces may be laminated for longevity.
Although algae do not form seeds, we believe this activity promotes knowledge of the unique diversity of species found along the Great Southern Reef. It is encouraging members of the community to become Citizen Scientists to observe, record and monitor our treasure trove of marine flora which is unique in the world and deserves being identified and monitored for changes with environmental developments.
